Dramatically effective Essay
ââ¬Å"And as I sat many afternoons asking myself why, being an intelligent man, I was so powerless to stop it. I even went to a certain old lady in the neighbourhood, a very wise old woman, and I told her, she only nodded, and said, ââ¬Å"pray for himâ⬠¦ â⬠and so I waited herâ⬠These are the words we hear from Alfieri after a very peculiar visit from one Eddie Carbone. Following the visit with Alfieri, Eddieââ¬â¢s mood is very tense. It is here where the audience receive a clear indication of Eddieââ¬â¢s feelings towards Catherine. Alfieri says to Eddie that Catherine wants to get married and thereââ¬â¢s nothing Eddie can do about it, but adds unless she he wants her to marry him. After hearing this Eddie furiously goes on the defensive and becomes very edgy. He then replies very harshly at Alfieri as if Alfieri is talking absolute rubbish and doesnââ¬â¢t have a clue. Eddie starts going on about all skills which Rodolfo has are not manly. He has difficulty describing his doubts to Alfieri ââ¬Å"The guy aint rightâ⬠he says and ââ¬Å"you know what I meanâ⬠. Miller shows how uncomfortable it is mentioning these things by the stage directions as Eddie twists and turns. Eddie talks about how he welcomed Rodolfo into his house and fed him and given him blankets right from his own bed and passionately say but heââ¬â¢s putting his filthy hands on her meaning Catherine. Just after that he then adds heââ¬â¢s stealing from me Mr Alfieri showing that Eddie thinks a lot of Catherine. He means stealing away something which should be his like Catherine as his lover. He keeps speaking of how he does not like Rodolfo; ââ¬Å"He gives me the heebie-jeebiesâ⬠, ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like his whole wayâ⬠and also hinted at his doubts on Rodolfoââ¬â¢s sexuality; ââ¬Å"Heââ¬â¢s like a weirdâ⬠, ââ¬Å"I just hope thatââ¬â¢s his regular hair! â⬠Lastly Alfieri makes a very important speech and says about how God mixes up people and thereââ¬â¢s love between them but sometimes thereââ¬â¢s too much, whether itââ¬â¢s to a daughter or a niece and the person never realises it but there is too much love for the daughter, thereââ¬â¢s too much love for the niece. Eddie pretends not to really understand him and hide behind just caring for her but Alfieri is slyly hinting about Eddieââ¬â¢s feelings for Catherine. Mainly the reason there is conflict between Eddie and Catherine is because of how Eddie is so protective of her. He tells her she is walking wavy and he doesnââ¬â¢t like that, at the same time he also refers to her as a ââ¬Å"Madonna. â⬠This gives the audience the idea that she is pure and she is a virgin and Eddie wants her to stay as she is. After the visit with Alfieri, Eddie gets home where everyone is talking about Rodolfo. Catherine seems very fascinated at everything Rodolfo does because of love, Even if some are the simplest things she is amazed. She acts like a curious child. Eddie notices her interest in Rodolfoââ¬â¢s singing so he quickly silences him. His ability to do this lets him believe that he is in charge in the house. The stage directions show his power because he stands up all the time. She starts of by saying ââ¬Å"They went to Africa once. On a fishing boat. (Eddie then glances at her). Its true, Eddie. â⬠Eddie replies and says he didnââ¬â¢t say they didnââ¬â¢t. The glance at Catherine from Eddie was to say that he really didnââ¬â¢t care what theyââ¬â¢ve done, and donââ¬â¢t want to get involved at all if it involves praising Rodolfo. I also found how every time in this section Eddie said something it was always directed at Marco and didnââ¬â¢t really want to talk to Rodolfo, sometimes even ignoring what he said. Eddie just wants to snap and put down anything good Rodolfo does, he seems to be just getting more anxious to tell him to shut up as you go on. Finally when Eddie and Marco are talking about oranges in Italy being painted, Rodolfo adds in how lemons are green. Eddie snaps ââ¬Å"I know lemons are green, for Christ sake, you see them in the store theyââ¬â¢re green sometimes. I said oranges they paint; I didnââ¬â¢t say nothing about lemons. â⬠It seems from Eddieââ¬â¢s point of view that Rodolfo is just trying to make Eddie out to be a fool or less of a man. Eddie always seems to mock Rodolfo. They call him a ââ¬Å"canaryâ⬠and a ââ¬Å"paper dollâ⬠. This all leads up to dramatic tension, for example eddies kiss with Catherine at the beginning of act two.

Biography – Herman Von Fehling
Herman von Fehling was a German chemist, who developed Fehlingââ¬â¢s solution which was used for estimations of sugar. The Fehlingââ¬â¢s solution is a chemical test used to differentiate between water-soluble carbohydrates and ketone functional groups, and as a test for monosaccharide. When working with Fehlingââ¬â¢s solution, Fehling took extra precautionary measurements when working in the laboratory. He created two separate solutions known as Fehlingââ¬â¢s A and Fehlingââ¬â¢s B.Fehlingââ¬â¢s A is a blue solution of Copper II, Sulfate, while Fehlingââ¬â¢s B is a clear solution of potassium, sodium, tartrate (Rhochelle Salt) and a strong alkali (Sodium hydroxide). The volumes of the two mixtures are mixed to get the final Fehlingââ¬â¢s solution. In this mixture, the aqueous tartrate ions from the dissolved Rochelle salt ions from the dissolved Copper II sulfate, as bidentate ligands giving bistartratocuprate II. The tartarate ions, by completing copper, preve nt the formation of Cu(OH)2 from the reaction of CuSO42H2O and NaOH in the solution.Fehlingââ¬â¢s solution is an oxidizing agent in the Bistartratocuprate II and the active reagent in the test. The compound being tested is added to Fehlingââ¬â¢s solution and the mixture is heated. The aldehydes are oxideized, giving a positive result, but ketones do not reacte, unless they are alpha-hydroxy-ketones. The bistratratocuprate II is a complex oxidizes the aldehyde to the carboxylate anion, and in the process the copper II ions of the xomplex are reduced to Copper I ions.A negative result is the absence of the red precipitate; Fehlingââ¬â¢s will NOT work with aromatic aldehydes; in that case Tollenââ¬â¢s reagent ââ¬â a chermical reagent most commonly used to determine whether a known carbonyl contation compound is an aldehyde or a ketone, a positive test with Tollenââ¬â¢s reagent sults in elemental silver precipitation out of solution, occasionally outo the inner surfac e of the tube, productiona characteristic and memorable ââ¬Å"silver mirrorâ⬠on the inner serface ââ¬â should be used.Fehlingââ¬â¢s earlier work included investigations of succinic acid, spirit of amber (white, odorless solid ââ¬â plays a role in citric acid cycle, an energy-yielding process) and the preparation of phenyl cyanide (benzonitrile ââ¬â organic compound, with a sweet almond odor). After many scientific discoveries or investigations Fehling started to lean more towards technology and public health rather than chemistry.Fehling started to work with estimation of sugars (Fehlingââ¬â¢s Solution) which was a solution of copper sulfate mixed with alkali and potassium sodium tartrate (Rochelle Salt). Fehling was born June 25, 1812 and died July 1, 1885, Fehling attended Heidelberg University around 1835 with the intention of taking pharmacy when entering. After Graduation he went to Gieben as a preparateur to Justus von Liebig, whom he created the compo sition of paraldehyde and metdehyde. After his discover with Sugar he contributed into the writing of Graham-Otto Textbook of Chemistry & Handworterbuch with Friedrich Wholer and Johann Christian Poggendorff. Fehling became a member of the committee of the Pharmacopoeia Germanica and he was appointed to the chair of chemistry in the polytechnic in Stuttgart for 45 years. He died in Stuttgart in 1885.

Hoitsus Mount Fugi by Sakai Hoitsu Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Hoitsus Mount Fugi by Sakai Hoitsu - Essay Example As a people of tradition and ritual, the Japanese put meaning into their artistic works that was defined by symbols that were readily available to all of those within the culture. Through the nature of this strong sense of symbolism, the people of Japan have left a long body of work that establishes patterns and belief systems about their culture. The artwork of Hoitsu and the writing of Basho are both a part of this heritage and contribute to the discourse through a connected cultural dialogue. The idea of meisho as it is described by Machotka as it refers to painting is that it represented a famous place, connecting the viewer to the image through heritage and culture. The fascinating element of meisho and its application in painting is that artistic works not only would often use the idea in their works, but in pre-modern Japan there was not the idea of creating a landscape that was not also representative of meisho. Machotka states that ââ¬Å"Japanese painting tradition did not appreciate places from outside of the vocabulary of meisho as an independent art theme as well as it did not demonstrate general concern in realistic description of views, which would evoke their authenticityâ⬠.1 Machotka also discusses the idea that many of the visual references were close to unidentifiable, but because they were associated with literary references, poetic descriptions of places from well known works, that identified them to the basic associations that were visually availa ble.2 Looking at the two paneled screen from the perspective of the viewer, the simplicity of the depiction is the first thing to strike the eye. There is a feeling of movement, but it is not harried nor is it in tension.

Market Equilibrating Process Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Market Equilibrating Process Paper - Essay Example However, I will argue that this may be the case at present but the product is at risk in the long term for several reasons. This can be reflected in the gradual shift in the supply and demand equilibrium. Successful branding and Apple innovation have ensured the current demand for iPhone. The product has been the first to usher in the era of "touch" smartphones and this has been displayed by the array of competitors emulating the product even until now. So for a time it has enjoyed leadership and dominance due to the scarcity of such product given the limited options and demand choices for consumers. Things are changing, however, because of the increasingly competitive market and the increasingly sophisticated requirements of the consumers. The development of the Googles Android operating system has launched the success of many smartphone manufacturers that collectively led to a viable and sophisticated alternative to the iPhones IOS. The Android phone and the iPhone became substitutes: as the price of the other increases, the demand for the other increase (p.50) Recently, a research by the firm IDC placed the market share of Android to about 68 percent whereas Apple claims only 16.9 percent (AP 2012). Of course, Android is fragmented into several phone manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC. But the trend signals an interesting shift in the market, which bring together buyers and sellers (p.46). This year Samsung toppled Apple as worlds leading phone manufacturer. As more and more people are exposed to many choices, they are able to expand the variables that inform the cost-bene fit analyses that drive their purchase decisions. In this instance, price and quantity are no longer the sole drivers of the market. The so-called other ââ¬Å"determinants of demandâ⬠assume equal importance in the pattern of market demand (p.48). Moreover, increased competition aggravates the principle of "diminishing marginal utility", which argues that "for a

American History - Assignment Example The question whether America shouldââ¬â¢ve postponed the election and waited until the war was over has its pros and cons. Had the elections been postponed, it wouldââ¬â¢ve led the country to what it is today. There will be no change of administration just like what happened with the re-election of former president Lincoln and same strategies wouldââ¬â¢ve done as well to cease the war. But if we travel back in time, we are the citizens of America in 1864, and we donââ¬â¢t have any idea of the future, postponing the elections wonââ¬â¢t really be an excellent decision to make. Since we donââ¬â¢t know when the war will last, a possible change of government, in case change is needed, will not be in the picture. America still deserves to choose whether to stick with the Surname 3 incumbent administration or not and that is by holding the elections. Postponement of it will deprive the country in any era, to its right to elect a leader who they think can lead them to a bet ter land. In 1864 presidential elections in the midst of the civil war, American citizens chose their countryââ¬â¢s future.

Taxes and Policies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Taxes and Policies - Essay Example The PTC has provided a big impetus to the industry. Unfortunately, the PTC is going to expire at the end of 2013 and that is causing the ripples among developers. Hydropower industry has come a long way providing 8% of all power generation and remains the dominant industry among all renewable power generation facilities of the country. The US government did a stupendous job by formulating the PTC in their 2005 Energy Policy Act and since then the industry is on resurge. It is not out of place to mention here that 84,000 families have now access to the cleaner source of energy (Snyder 2012). It is strongly required that the PTC is provided a long-term extension to continue with the high growth that has been witnessed in these years. There is no doubt that our country has absolute advantage in harnessing hydropower and that is evident from the fact that taking advantage of the PTC, 23 states have increased their hydropower output by around 11% and more can be done in the years to come provided the government continues to grant their support as done in the past (Church

Homosexuality Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1
Homosexuality - Research Paper Example At first, people thought that it is genetics or hereditary because it usually runs in the family. People thought that since it runs in the family, there must be a particular DNA that makes a person homosexual. Others thought that it is the external environment that makes a person gay. It is thought that the external environment influences a certain person to change his or her gender orientation and sexual preference. Peer pressure is often cited as a cause that makes an individual adapt the preference of his or her group. Many thought that the environment itself makes one homosexual such as having dolls as toys when they are kids make one homosexual. There are also people who thought that homosexuality begins with having a certain homosexual genes or DNA and then made it a full blown homosexual when one is exposed to environment and having a group that makes a person homosexual. All of these theorizing seems plausible but experts disagree on this notion about what really causes or makes one gay. They found out through research that neither our genes or environment makes us gay. Scientists claim that homosexuality is neither genetic or external social factors but rather it is the womb that makes one gay. Scientists call it Epigenetic which is the process where DNA expression is influenced by external factors in the environment (not social factors). Specifically, experts argue that Epigenetic mechanisms can be seen as an added layer of information that clings to our DNA. Epi-marks regulate the expression of genes according to the strength of external cues. Genes are basically the instruction book, while epi-marks direct how those instructions get carried out. For example, they can determine when, where, and how much of a gene gets expressed (Dvorsky, 201). This explains why researchers initially did not find any DNA that links to homosexuality before because there was really none but rather, the root is contained in the motherââ¬â¢s womb. National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) confirm this that being gay is written in how are genes are expressed and how it is activated (Blue, 2012). Personally, it does not matter much to me the gender orientation or preference of a person. Of course the scientist findings enlighten me that after all, it is not in the genes but rather in the womb that makes a person predisposed to homosexuality . But what is important to me is that homosexuality does not define a person to be good or bad. They are unusual yes, but gender preference and orientation is just one aspect of their personhood. Honestly, I am not used to homosexuals but they can become productive members of society when opportunity allows them. I have seen countless gays or homosexuals in America who are living normal lives and having normal careers where many are even successful. I have also seen happy gay couples which seemed to live a normal life. In general, I can see that homosexuals does not cause harm to society but in fact can do good society because many of them are creative owing to their unnatural gender orientation. Personally, I think society should become more accepting towards homosexuals. People should judge a person by his or her character not just because he or she is homosexual or gay. According to experts, homosexuals composed around 10% of our population so it is better of us to be tolerant wi th them because they are there whether we like it or not (Blue, 2012). Instead of
